Refugees and migrants have few protections. They are especially vulnerable to those who prey on the weak and defenseless. Because refugees often don’t speak the language and have forged documents, they become prime targets for scams, mistreatment, and abduction. When I read the article below (from ekathimerini.com), my mind went to God’s words through His prophet Amos:
2:6 – “…they sell the needy for a pair of sandals”
4:1 – “…you cows of Bashan… who oppress the poor, who crush the needy”
5:11 – “…you trample on the poor”
8:4 – “…you who trample on the needy and bring the poor of the land to an end”
Six arrested after 10 migrants freed from shipping container
Police said yesterday that they have arrested six people alleged to have been part of a human-trafficking ring that kept 10 migrants locked in a shipping container in Aspropyrgos, west of Athens, for about a month during which they were mistreated by their captors who demanded more money from them. The illegal immigrants (eight Pakistanis, a Somali and a Syrian) had each paid 7,000 euros to be smuggled to Greece but on their arrival in the country, they were allegedly locked in the container by the suspects (three Greeks, two Pakistanis and an Indian) who demanded they each pay another 4,000 euros to be released.
Amos 5:24 – “But let just roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” Amen.
